Blue is the most-worn colour there is, and it covers more ground than any other. Our blue fabric collection runs from crisp cotton and classic denim through to linen, viscose, wool and fluid crepe, in shades from soft duck egg and sky blue to navy, royal, teal and indigo. Whether you're sewing a denim skirt, a summer dress or a tailored coat, there's a shade and weight here to suit. Not sure which? Order a sample first.

Blue is the colour people reach for most, and it's the most versatile in any fabric stash. It suits every season and every kind of make, flatters most skin tones, and sits happily next to white, cream, tan, denim and grey. From the palest duck egg and powder blue through sky, cornflower and teal to royal, navy and deep indigo, blue spans a huge range, which is part of the appeal and part of the challenge when matching a shade.

At Croft Mill, our blue fabric collection runs from everyday cottons and classic denim to linen, wool and fluid drapes. You'll find lightweight summer fabrics alongside hard-wearing denim and warm coating, so whether you're making something floaty, something built to last or something tailored, there's an option here.

Types of blue fabric

Blue cotton fabric is the everyday starting point. Poplin, lawn and poly-cotton are crisp and breathable for blouses, summer dresses, shirts and children's clothes, whilst cotton canvas gives weight for bags and structured pieces. Printed cottons and ginghams suit craft and quilting.

Blue denim and chambray are where blue really comes into its own. Washed denim in pale, mid and indigo blue is made for jeans, skirts, jackets and pinafores, whilst lighter chambray and denim seersucker suit shirts and summer dresses.

Blue linen brings natural texture and breathability, ideal for relaxed dresses, wide-leg trousers and loose shirts. It softens with every wash.

Blue wool and coating bring warmth and a sharp line. Marine and navy boiled wool press well and hold their shape, ideal for jackets, coats and tailored trousers.

Blue viscose and crepe are the soft, fluid options. Viscose challis drapes beautifully for summer dresses and blouses, whilst satin-backed crepe suits occasion and eveningwear.

Blue lining gives coats, jackets and skirts a clean, professional finish and helps them hang well.

Choosing and caring for blue fabric

Blue is easy to misjudge on screen, as navy, royal and indigo can all read similarly until you see them in daylight. If you're matching to an existing garment or trim, order a sample and check it in natural light before cutting. New denim and deep indigo can bleed dye on the first few washes, so wash separately to begin with, inside out and in cool water, and dry away from direct sun to keep the colour rich. Always follow the individual product's care guidance, as this varies by fabric.

Can I buy blue fabric by the metre?

Yes, most of our blue fabrics are sold by either the metre or half metre. Simply enter the quantity you need at the product level and we'll cut it to length.

What's the best blue fabric for dressmaking?

It depends on the garment. For structured pieces like tailored dresses or skirts, a blue cotton poplin or denim works well. For floaty summer dresses, blue chiffon or georgette gives beautiful drape. Jersey cotton is the go-to for comfortable everyday wear.
