Friday Pattern Company

Plenty of indie pattern brands are technically excellent and quietly intimidating. Friday Pattern Company sits at the other end: the shapes are loose enough that fitting stops being the obstacle, the instructions are written plainly, and the results look like clothes people actually wear rather than sewing projects. That combination is why the brand's patterns turn up so often as somebody's first successful make.

The house style is relaxed and slightly oversized, with a leaning towards easy dresses, gathered shapes, wide-legged trousers and casual outerwear. Because so little of it is closely fitted, the same pattern usually works across a range of body shapes without much alteration, and the size range is drawn generously. The brand also gives a percentage of each sale to charity, which it names on its own site.

The current range covers dresses and gowns, blouses and tops, jumpsuits, trousers, a skirt set, jackets and blazers, a pullover, and a small men's line including a jacket and trousers. Fabric and sizing

Each pattern lists its own fabric suggestions, and with relaxed shapes the drape of the cloth does most of the work. A gathered dress in a crisp cotton is a different garment from the same dress in a viscose, so it's worth ordering a sample and handling it before committing. Our dress fabrics collection covers most of what these patterns ask for.

Sizing is drafted to the brand's own chart and won't match UK ready-to-wear. Measure your bust, waist and hip and read the chart on the pattern page. Because the styles carry a lot of ease, the finished garment measurements are often the more useful number to check. All patterns sold here are printed paper patterns, posted out to you.
