Cotton fabric remains one of the most popular choices for dressmaking thanks to its comfort, breathability and versatility. Available in a wide range of weights, weaves and finishes, cotton can be used for everything from everyday shirts and blouses to dresses, skirts, trousers and children's clothing. Whether you prefer crisp structure or a softer drape, there's a cotton fabric to suit almost any sewing project.

Choosing the right cotton fabric for your project

Cotton fabric is available in a wide range of weights, and choosing the right one can make all the difference to the finished result. Lightweight cottons such as lawn, voile and fine shirting fabrics are breathable, soft against the skin and ideal for blouses, summer dresses, children's clothing and other garments where comfort and drape are important.

Mid-weight cotton fabrics, including poplins and many dressmaking cottons, offer a balance of structure and versatility. They are suitable for shirts, dresses, skirts, shorts and everyday garments that need a little more body while remaining comfortable to wear throughout the year.

Heavier cotton fabrics such as canvas, twill, brushed cotton and winceyette are better suited to projects that benefit from extra durability or warmth. These fabrics work well for trousers, overshirts, lightweight jackets, workwear-inspired garments, pyjamas and winter clothing.

Whatever weight you choose, cotton remains one of the most practical fabrics to sew and wear. If you're planning a garment that will be washed regularly, we recommend pre-washing your fabric before cutting out your pattern pieces to allow for any natural shrinkage.

What is the difference between cotton poplin and cotton lawn?

Cotton poplin and cotton lawn are both lightweight woven cotton fabrics, but they feel quite different. Cotton poplin has a smooth surface with a slightly crisp handle, making it a popular choice for shirts, shirt dresses, skirts and trousers. Cotton lawn is finer and lighter, with a softer feel and a fluid drape that works particularly well for blouses, summer dresses and children's clothing.

Is cotton fabric easy for beginners to sew?

Yes, cotton is often recommended for beginner sewing projects. It is generally stable, easy to cut, presses well and behaves predictably under the sewing machine. Mid-weight cotton fabrics such as poplin and shirting are particularly beginner-friendly, while very lightweight fabrics like cotton lawn may require a little more care and precision.

Does cotton fabric shrink when washed?

Cotton can shrink during its first wash, especially if it has not been pre-treated by the manufacturer. For this reason, we recommend washing your fabric before cutting out your pattern pieces. Use the same washing method you intend to use for the finished garment and allow the fabric to dry completely before sewing.

Is 100% cotton better than a cotton blend?

Not necessarily. A 100% cotton fabric offers natural breathability and comfort, while cotton blends can add useful properties such as stretch, crease resistance or durability. The best option depends on the project. If you're specifically looking for pure cotton fabric, use the Yarn filter and select 100% yarn content when browsing our collection.

Can cotton fabric be worn all year round?

Absolutely. Cotton fabrics are available in a wide range of weights, making them suitable for every season. Lightweight cotton lawns, voiles and poplins are ideal for spring and summer garments, while heavier cotton fabrics such as brushed cotton, flannel, twill and canvas are well suited to autumn and winter sewing. Choosing the right weight is often more important than the fibre itself.
