Silk is a natural protein fibre known for its smooth handle, natural sheen and fluid drape. Despite its reputation for delicacy, silk is one of the strongest natural fibres - lightweight enough for summer garments, yet warm enough to wear in cooler months. Our silk dressmaking fabrics include silk crepe de chine, silk satin, silk chiffon and dupion, alongside silk blends sourced from specialist mills.

Whether you're sewing a special occasion dress, a silk blouse or bridal wear, silk produces a finish that synthetic alternatives can't replicate. Our range includes both classic silk types and ex-designer and deadstock pieces for those looking for something less widely available.

Choosing the right silk fabric

Silk has been prized for centuries for its natural lustre, beautiful drape and comfortable feel against the skin. Despite its luxurious reputation, silk is surprisingly versatile and can be used for everything from everyday blouses and shirts to occasionwear, bridal garments and special projects.

The weight and construction of the silk will have the biggest influence on the finished garment. Lightweight silks such as chiffon and crepe de chine create soft, flowing silhouettes, while silk satin offers a smooth surface and elegant drape. More structured silks, including dupion silk, provide additional body and are often chosen for tailored garments and occasionwear.

One of silk's most appealing qualities is its natural ability to regulate temperature. It feels cool in warmer weather, provides insulation when temperatures drop and remains comfortable to wear throughout the year. Silk is also lightweight, breathable and known for its distinctive appearance that synthetic fabrics often try to replicate.

What types of silk fabric are available for dressmaking?

The most common silk types for dressmaking include silk crepe de chine (lightweight, fluid drape, ideal for blouses and dresses), silk satin (smooth, lustrous surface used for eveningwear and bridal), silk chiffon (sheer and floaty, used for overlay layers and occasion pieces), and dupion silk (a slubbed, crisp fabric with a matte-sheen texture popular for structured garments and bridal wear).

Is silk fabric difficult to sew?

Silk requires a little more care than cotton or linen, but it's manageable with the right preparation. Use fine, sharp needles (size 60/8 to 70/10), fine pins, and tissue paper or a silk organza underlayer when cutting to prevent slipping. A short stitch length and slow machine speed will give you the most control. Pre-washing or dry cleaning before cutting is recommended for most silk types.

How do I care for silk fabric and silk garments?

Many silk types can be hand washed in cool water with a gentle detergent, though dry cleaning is recommended for structured garments and heavier silks like dupion. Avoid wringing - roll in a towel to remove excess water and hang or lay flat to dry. Press on the reverse with a cool iron, using a pressing cloth to avoid water marks and shine.

What is the difference between real silk and synthetic satin?

Real silk is a natural protein fibre produced by silkworms. It has a subtle, natural lustre, breathes well, and drapes differently from synthetic alternatives. Polyester satin mimics the sheen of silk but doesn't breathe and has a more uniform, plastic-like surface. For dressmaking, real silk produces a finish and drape that synthetic fabrics can't fully replicate.
