Vikisews takes current ready-to-wear shapes and turns them into home-sewing patterns quickly, which is why the range reads more like a fashion collection than a traditional pattern catalogue. The drafting is close-fitting and the instructions are unusually detailed, running to far more steps than most brands do. Sizes cover UK 6 to 24 for the women's range, with a small men's line alongside it in UK 28 to 44.

Most pattern houses run a season or two behind the shops. Vikisews doesn't, and that's the main reason people seek the brand out: if you've seen a shape in a window and want to make it rather than buy it, there's a reasonable chance the pattern exists here. The trade-off is that the drafting is closer to the body than the relaxed indie style, so fitting matters more.

The instructions are the brand's other distinguishing feature. They're long, illustrated in detail and take you through construction steps that other patterns leave you to work out, including proper interfacing, linings and finishes. That makes some patterns look more daunting on paper than they are in practice, and it also means a Vikisews garment tends to come out looking bought rather than made.

Each pattern carries its own difficulty rating and its own fabric recommendations, and with fitted drafting both are worth reading before you commit. A pattern designed for a firm woven will not behave in a soft one.

Fabric and sizing

Sizing is drafted to Vikisews' own chart, converted to UK sizes on the product titles. Because so much of the range is fitted, measure your bust, waist and hip properly and read the chart on the individual pattern page rather than assuming a size. Making a toile first is time well spent on the more structured patterns.
