Italian mills have set the benchmark for suiting cloth for well over a century, and the reason is consistency: fine yarns, tight worsted weaves, and finishing that leaves the cloth with a clean handle and a quiet lustre rather than a shine. What arrives here is the cloth itself rather than the label, bought as ex-designer stock, mill ends and short runs, which is why the prices look the way they do.

The range moves as stock does, but it typically runs across three groups. Plain and semi-plain worsteds in navy, charcoal, grey and taupe do the everyday work of a suit or a separate jacket. Patterned cloths cover glen checks, windowpanes, herringbones and finer stripes for something with more character. And there's usually a small run of heavier or specialist pieces, including cashmere blends and fleece-finished wool suitings, for jackets and coats.

Choosing a suiting weight

Lightweight suitings drape well and are comfortable indoors or in warmer weather, but they show construction faults more readily and want careful pressing. Mid-weight cloth is the safest general choice for a first suit: it tailors predictably, holds a crease and forgives a little. Heavier suitings are better suited to structured jackets, waistcoats and trousers that need to keep their shape. Linings for suits and jackets

A suit is only as good as its inside. Keeping the linings on the same page means you can match a colour or a print to the cloth in one order rather than guessing across two collections. Twill linings are the traditional choice for jacket bodies and sleeves because they slide well and wear hard. Printed and patterned linings are a good way to put something personal where only you'll see it. Sewing and care

Wool suiting benefits from a proper press cloth and steam rather than a dry hot iron directly on the face. Pre-shrinking, whether by steaming the cloth or having it sponged, is worth the time on anything tailored, because a suit that shrinks after the first press is not recoverable. Use a fine needle, a slightly longer stitch length and interface where the pattern tells you to. Most wool suiting is dry clean only, though you should check the individual product page and the care label for each cloth.

Because much of this cloth is ex-designer or deadstock, quantities are limited and pieces don't usually come back once they're gone. What makes Italian suit fabric different from other wool suiting?

Italian mills tend to spin finer yarns and finish the cloth more lightly, which gives a softer handle and a subtle lustre rather than a hard, flat surface. It isn't automatically better for every project, but it's why Italian suiting is the usual reference point for tailoring cloth.

How much Italian wool suiting fabric do I need for a suit?

It depends entirely on the pattern, your size and the fabric width, so work it out from your pattern's fabric requirements rather than a rule of thumb. As a rough starting point, a two-piece suit usually needs somewhere in the region of 3 to 4 metres of 150cm wide cloth. Always check the width shown on the product page.

Can you dry clean Italian wool suiting fabric?

Most wool suiting is dry clean only, and that's the safest assumption for tailored garments. Check the individual product page and the care label for each cloth, as some blends will take a gentle wool wash.

Do I need to line a wool suit jacket?

A lining isn't structurally essential, but it makes a jacket far more comfortable to wear, helps it slide over other layers and protects the wrong side of the cloth from wear. Most jacket patterns assume a lining, and the linings on this page are chosen to sit alongside the suitings.

Is Italian suiting fabric hard to sew?

Wool suiting is one of the more forgiving fabrics to sew because it presses and eases so well. The tailoring itself is the harder part rather than the cloth. Use a press cloth, take your time with the pressing, and make a toile first if you're fitting a jacket.
