Fruit & Food Print Fabric

Lemons, strawberries, cherries and more, this collection brings together our fruit and food print fabrics across cotton, linen, viscose and jersey. Cheerful and summery without being childish, these prints work just as well in adult dressmaking as they do for children's clothes and craft projects. Sold by the metre or half metre depending on the fabric, with free samples available on most.

Fruit and food prints have a habit of being written off as novelty fabric, but that undersells what's actually available. Most fruit print ranges elsewhere sit in stretch or costume fabric, aimed squarely at the dancewear market rather than dressmaking. This collection is different: it spans proper dressmaking weights, linen, viscose, cotton lawn, seersucker, alongside the lighter craft cottons, so a lemon or cherry print can genuinely anchor a dress or a shirt, not just a tea towel.

The prints range from crisp, graphic citrus repeats to softer, painterly berry and mixed fruit designs, so there's a fair bit of scope for how bold or subtle the finished piece ends up.

Types of fruit and food fabric

Citrus prints (lemons, oranges) are the most established motif in the range, appearing on everything from cotton poplin to linen-blend and knitted jersey, with at least one design having appeared on Great British Sewing Bee.

Berry and cherry prints bring a softer, often more painterly quality, found across cotton lawn, poly/cotton and seersucker.

Mixed fruit and tropical prints combine several fruits, sometimes alongside leaves or florals, for a busier, more decorative option.

What to make with fruit and food fabric

For dressmaking, lighter fruit prints in cotton lawn or viscose work well for summer dresses and blouses, while linen versions suit relaxed trousers and shirts. Seersucker fruit prints are a good option for children's summer clothes. For home and craft projects, the cotton-weight prints are well suited to aprons, tea towels, bunting and quilting.

Are fruit and food prints only suitable for children's clothes?

No. While they work well for children's sewing, several of the fabric types in this collection, particularly linen, viscose and cotton lawn, are dressmaking weights suited to adult garments as well. The print reads as playful rather than childish when kept to a well-made, structured piece.

How do I care for printed fruit and food fabrics?

Wash at 30 or 40 degrees on a gentle cycle, inside out where possible, unless the care label states otherwise. Linen will crease more than cotton or viscose; this is normal rather than a fault.

Are these fabrics suitable for quilting and craft projects as well as dressmaking?

Yes. The cotton-weight prints in particular are popular for quilting, patchwork, bunting and bags, while the linen and viscose options are better suited to garments.

Do the fruit prints repeat at a scale that needs matching?

Most fruit and food prints in this collection are scattered, non-directional designs, so they don't need careful pattern matching at the seams in the way a stripe or check would.

Can I order a sample before buying?

Yes. Most fabrics in this collection are available as a free sample so you can check the print scale, colour and fabric handle before committing to a full cut. Use the "Order Sample" option on the product page.
